Spanish Overview
Kidslingo Programme
The Spanish curriculum is carefully sequenced to provide a coherent language-learning journey that develops pupils’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills alongside grammatical understanding. Key aspects such as pronunciation, phonics, vocabulary acquisition, and sentence building are revisited throughout all stages and developed progressively. Pupils also learn cultural knowledge to foster curiosity and appreciation of Spanish-speaking countries.
The curriculum follows the national guidance for KS2 languages, ensuring pupils build confidence in communication and develop a foundation for further language study. Each stage introduces new vocabulary and structures while consolidating prior learning, with opportunities for meaningful connections to other subjects such as geography, music, and art.
All Spanish lessons are delivered through the Kidslingo approach, which uses songs, games, role play, and interactive activities to make language learning engaging and memorable. Grammar is introduced gradually, starting with simple sentence structures and moving towards more complex tenses and agreements in later years.
We follow the Kidslingo Scheme for our Spanish lessons in Years 3 - 6.

Stage 1 = Year 3
Stage 2 = Year 4
Stage 3 = Year 5
Stage 4 = Year 6
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1)
Although formal Spanish teaching begins in KS2, EYFS and KS1 pupils experience exposure to Spanish through songs, greetings, and counting games, fostering early interest and phonological awareness. Kidslingo also deliver a Spanish After School Club for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
Key Stage 2 (KS2)
Stage 1 (Year 3 – First Year)
Pupils begin by learning basic greetings, numbers, colours, and simple phrases. They develop listening skills through songs and actions, start to recognise written words, and copy short phrases. Speaking focuses on repeating 10–20 words and answering simple questions. Grammar includes understanding noun gender and basic sentence structure.
Topics: All About Me, Phonics (Part 1 & 2), Me & My Family, plus seasonal occasions.
Stage 2 (Year 4 – Second Year)
Vocabulary expands to 20–30 words per topic, and pupils begin expressing simple opinions and preferences. They listen to short sentences, read familiar words, and write simple sentences from memory. Grammar includes imperative forms, adjective agreement, and plural nouns.
Topics: Body or Clothes & Weather, School or Pets, Days Out & Summer Holidays.
Stage 3 (Year 5 – Third Year)
Pupils hold short conversations, ask and answer 4+ questions, and justify opinions. They read and understand short texts (e.g., postcards) and write compound sentences using connectives. Grammar develops to include regular and irregular verbs and adverbs.
Topics: Universe & Autumn or Our Planet, Winter & Food, Sports or About the Town.
Stage 4 (Year 6 – Fourth Year)
Pupils take part in longer conversations, express opinions with reasons, and adapt written texts to change tense or person. They read and translate short paragraphs and write short texts independently. Grammar includes future and past tenses, conditional forms, and formal/informal address.
Topics: Daily Routine or About the Town, House & Home, Careers & Days Out.
Pedagogical Approach
Lessons are interactive and practical, using songs, games, and visual aids to reinforce phonics and pronunciation. Pupils are encouraged to develop confidence through speaking activities and collaborative tasks. Knowledge Organisers and glossaries support independent learning and vocabulary retention.
