IMPLEMENTATION

We use the Literary Curriculum, which is text-based and places quality books at the core, using the text as the context for the requirements of the national curriculum. Yearly overviews of texts used accompany medium terms plans, which are adapted weekly to the class by the teacher.

At Asmall, writing is taught everyday across the whole school, linked to reading/texts. Each class studies a different high-quality text, which may last a week or up to a few weeks. In KS2, whole class Guided Reading sessions, planned by the teacher, are taught to develop a range of skills and to expose the children to a variety of texts. Genre study comes through the range of books covered either in English lesson or across the curriculum.

The children are taught phonics daily, in groups matched to the phase they are on. We use the Red Rose phonics scheme and the reading books are matched to the phases in EYFS and through into KS1. Some of the Reception children start on picture books, before moving onto word books. The children pick their books with an adult and are read with regularly in school. Reading at home is strongly encouraged too.

The reading book schemes used through school are colour banded and matched to the children’s ability. The schemes used are Pearson, Oxford and Dandelion. Children pick their books and they are checked by an adult before moving them on. For children with particular learning needs, there are a selection of texts that will support their development, which they can access. These are kept in their own area and the children choose them with an adult.
