Intent

Asmall School believes that all children deserve an education rich in memorable experiences that allows our children’s creativity and curiosity to grow, alongside the development of key skills and knowledge. English underpins learning in every subject and we work to ensure that there are significant opportunities across the wider curriculum for pupils to embed their literacy skills.  Strong English skills are essential for progress across the whole curriculum and to prepare pupils effectively for tasks in adult life. At Asmall, the quality, English curriculum develops the children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We believe the exposure of children’s literature within the primary school setting is vital as a rich context for learning; not only within English as a subject, but to support building a reading culture throughout the school. We passionately believe that reading and writing are inextricably linked therefore studying the text in both reading and writing sessions encourages children to make links and become empathetic and ambitious writers.

It is our intention to provide a stimulating learning environment where all children can work with adults and peers in a climate of mutual respect to develop confidence in their ability to learn. All teachers have a responsibility to develop pupils’ competence in reading, writing, speaking and listening in their own subjects and to ensure that pupils become competent users of language and that they can access the curriculum effectively and achieve their potential. We intend to provide the children with quality texts, experiences and opportunities to achieve.
