Intent

At Asmall, we believe that reading is the doorway to all learning. We are dedicated to ensuring that each and every one of our children learns to become accurate, confident and passionate readers. We do this through the teaching of systematic phonics, following the Red Rose Letter and Sounds, in Reception and KS1.

At Asmall, we base our early reading around phonics. Children are taught letter sounds as part of their daily phonics sessions. These begin early in Reception Class and continue until your child is confident with all their sounds. We use the Lancashire Red Rose scheme. Children are taught in small groups for half an hour each day.

Our main reading scheme is Phonics Bug, but we also use books from the following schemes:

Comics for Phonics

Oxford Reading Tree

Bug Club

Dandelion

Our books are colour coded and children choose their own books from a selection of graded books at their phonics level.

Once children have completed Phase 6 of Letters and Sounds, they continue to select their own reading books from graded books.  There is a range of fiction, non fiction and poetry from a range of reading schemes. In addition, children in KS 2 also choose books from the school library and class reading areas.

The English Curriculum we use is text-based to ensure reading is at the heart of the curriculum.

This scheme is called The Literacy Tree.
