Computing Curriculum Overview

Computing Overview

PurpleMash

The computing projects are well sequenced to provide a coherent subject scheme that develops children’s digital literacy, computer science and information technology skills.

The Purple Mash computing curriculum is structured to ensure progression across all key stages, with clear coverage of the national curriculum programmes of study. Each unit builds on prior learning and introduces new concepts in a logical and engaging way, allowing children to revisit and deepen their understanding of key computing themes such as coding, online safety, spreadsheets, databases, and digital communication.

Where there are opportunities for making meaningful connections with other subjects, computing projects are sequenced accordingly. For example, children may use data handling skills in science investigations or apply coding knowledge to control devices in design and technology projects.

All computing units are taught across the academic year, with flexibility for schools to revisit key skills or reinforce learning through cross-curricular applications. The scheme ensures that children develop both practical and theoretical knowledge of computing, including how to use technology safely and responsibly.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In EYFS, children begin to explore technology in their everyday lives. They use simple digital devices to take photographs, play educational games, and record their ideas. Through guided play and exploration, children develop early computing skills such as clicking, dragging, and typing. They also begin to understand the importance of staying safe online and using technology respectfully. These foundational experiences prepare children for more structured computing learning in Key Stage 1.

Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, children build on their early experiences by developing their understanding of digital content and basic programming. Using Purple Mash, they learn to create simple algorithms, debug errors, and use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, and retrieve digital content. They explore topics such as pictograms, spreadsheets, and email, and begin to understand how to use technology safely and respectfully. The curriculum introduces foundational computing concepts while encouraging creativity, independence, and problem-solving.

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4)
In Lower Key Stage 2, children deepen their understanding of computing systems and digital tools. They explore more complex coding concepts, including sequence, repetition, and selection, and begin to use simulations and databases. Children learn how to use spreadsheets for calculations and data analysis, and they develop their understanding of networks and the internet. Online safety remains a key focus, with children learning how to recognise risks and act responsibly. Purple Mash supports cross-curricular links, allowing children to apply computing skills in subjects such as science, maths, and geography.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6)
In Upper Key Stage 2, children consolidate and extend their computing knowledge through more advanced projects. They explore variables and functions in coding, create blogs and websites, and use email and collaborative tools to communicate effectively. Children also learn about the impact of technology on society and how to evaluate digital content critically. Online safety is explored in greater depth, including issues around digital footprints, cyberbullying, and secure passwords. Purple Mash provides opportunities for children to apply their skills in real-world contexts, preparing them for the transition to secondary computing.
